It is difficult to say what the Chinese artist Bai Yiluo was thinking when creating his sculpture of an incomprehensible shape and appearance. And why did you call this installation "Demons"? After all, there are no images of any monsters and devils, this is a simple shapeless lump, pasted over with clock pictures. The sculpture was created by the artist specifically for the Beijing Biennale.
Demons is a sculptural installation in the form of a huge shaft that rotates on a horizontal spit. The biomorphic shape resembles the carcass of a fried lamb, which is cooked on a kebab spit. Visitors to the exhibition are invited to participate in the show and turn the lump on the spit by the handle. The outside of the large obscure sculpture is covered in collages of wristwatch pictures that have been cut from magazines, advertisements, and glued together to the surface of the block. The inner part is made of foam filled with a variety of materials.
Bai Yiluo is a self-taught artist as well as a photographer. He started his career as a worker at a Luoyang factory in China. Finding his work monotonous, Bai Yilou decided to study the art of photography as a means of self-expression. The characteristic features of the Bai Yiluo sculptures are their large-scale, intricacy, the creation of which takes a lot of time and effort. Many of them are related to the personal experience of the artist. Bai Yiluo's work is on display throughout the world, including the London Museums and the Pompidou Center in Paris.
