Imagine something that looks like a helicopter, a hawk, a birthday cake or a book made of hair - and this is just a small part of the incredible hairstyles that are created on the American show "Hair Wars". Without having the opportunity to admire these extreme hair constructions live, we can still see them thanks to photographer David Yellen.
The idea for "Hair Wars" originated in the mid-1980s with David Humphries, and since then the fun and wacky show has been regularly staged in the nightclubs of Detroit, the author's hometown. The entertainment was so popular that in 1994 it grew into a national show and has since been held in the largest cities of the United States: New York, Miami, Los Angeles … At this event, professional stylists fight each other over the wildest and creative hair design. But Hair Wars is not a competition, but rather a showcase of the most unimaginable hairdressing talent the country has ever seen.
In 2004, photographer David Yellen joined the show, accompanying Hair Wars in different cities and capturing the most striking hairstyles. The result of his work was more than just a report on the bouffants made and the amount of styling products used. Yellen grasped the main thing - the unusual beauty and authenticity that each stylist brings to the created hairstyle and the image as a whole.
Curls, curls, braids - being individually just elements of a hairstyle, in the works of David Yellen, they have become a real work of art. The photographs convey the true artistic value of the hairstyle styles and show how each style can overwhelm you with its complexity and uniqueness. Yellen later combined his photographs into a book that was published in 2007.
David Yellen was born in 1972. He currently lives and works in New York. His work has been published in publications such as Time, Fortune, People, ESPN and Best Life.

So, the finest hour has come for those girls who did not shy away from needlework lessons at school and listened carefully to their mother or grandmother, who taught knitting and embroidery to "their clever girl."
