Pork pieces as art? Why not? Los Angeles-based artist Victoria Reynolds has openly admitted that meat has been her muse for the past ten years.
In one of her interviews, Victoria spoke about her idea of using images of raw meat in her artwork. “Life in the flesh is beautiful, although we can belittle its greatness, focusing, for example, on biblical dogmas. In Dutch Protestant visual arts of the 15th and 16th centuries, meat was often depicted as weak flesh. In my paintings, the beauty of the flesh is shown, and the richly decorated frames emphasize the non-puritanical orientation of the work. People usually call them excessive. I always create them so that they are worthy rivals with the pictures. When people see my work, some people claim that they cannot restrain the gag reflex and at the same time consider them beautiful."
The artist says that in her works, raw meat is depicted in a ostentatious, hedonistic manner, and the paintings themselves should be luxurious and sensual. Victoria wants meat in her images to be associated with sensuality, carnal human nature and mortality, sins and body pleasures.
Victoria Reynolds assures that in her paintings she is not trying to urge viewers to eat meat or, on the contrary, to refuse it. Still, I wonder what vegetarians think of her work?
Before Victoria was fascinated by the topic of meat, the artist painted in oil paintings about many spoiled waffle cones with ice cream. Sticky and stained. The artist claims that the cream used to decorate ice cream, as well as meat, came to us from the animal world.
Victoria Reynolds is from Texas. She now lives in Los Angeles, and her controversial work is shown at exhibitions in the United States and Europe.
