The men from one Scottish village amused themselves in the following way: they got drunk, armed themselves, fought, burned the boat, after which the contented ones went home and went to bed. The whole world learned about this fun, thanks to which the scale of the holiday increased - now it is an annual Viking festival, which has been held for more than 100 years.
In fact, the very fact of the festival raises big questions for both the audience and its participants. The times of the Viking raids on Scottish land are not the best period in the history of this country. However, the British peasants from the edges of that village are proud of their historical ties with the barbarians. And they consider the holding of the festival to follow the Scandinavian culture. In recent years, women have also begun to join the festival. Because of this, the holiday was even nicknamed the festival of transvestites.
The Viking festival, called Up Helly Aa, is one of the brightest torchlight festivals in the world. This holiday is 140 years old. The festival takes place in the city of Lerwick and various villages and townships in Scotland. The Aphelio festival is held as follows: about a thousand men dress up in Viking outfits and, to the beat of drums and victorious shouts, carry a specially cut 30-foot ship to the sea to burn it. Before burning the ship, disguised Vikings are photographed in front of it.
After a souvenir photo, the men throw torches at the ship as they watch it burn. This is how the ancient warriors buried relatives who became heroes of battles.
Then the Vikings arrange a religious procession, after which they go to various parties in schools, sports clubs, hotels, etc. There, festival participants drink, dance, parody local events.
The festival has its own official website, where everyone can learn more about this Scottish fun.
