It would seem that what is common between Spain and India? A prosperous European country with emerald vineyards and fiery flamenco is not at all like the mysterious meditative India, where most of the population lives below the poverty line. Surprisingly, they have at least one similarity: the traditional Spanish bullfighting has an analogue in the Indian manner - Jallicattu. During this sporting event, the locals try to ride an angry bull. The main difference from the Spanish spectacle is that in India the animal is never killed.
Jallikattu (bullfighting) is held on the second day of the Pongal festival, a four-day harvest festival. Hindus regard this animal as the main labor force in growing crops, so this duel is a way to show respect for it. Bulls are released directly into the crowd, providing an opportunity for any daredevil to "saddle" the animal, having received a prize for this. To complicate matters, bulls are driven to fury by throwing hot peppers in their eyes, sharpening their horns or pinching their tail. Despite the fact that this sport takes several lives and cripples hundreds of people every year, it does not lose its popularity.
The Jallikattu tradition is unique as this competition has existed for over five thousand years. The festival is attended by young Tamils - a people living in India and engaged in arable farming. In Tamil culture, fearlessness and courage have always been revered, it is these qualities that can be manifested in a battle with a bull.
It is believed that winning boys become more attractive to girls looking for a groom. Perhaps, in courage with the Tamils, only forcade womens, permanent participants in the Portuguese bullfight, whose goal is not to kill the bull, but only to tease him!
