Ned Kahn is one of those artists who were able to combine art and nature in their works. He does not photograph the latter, does not depict her in paintings, but takes her as an ally and co-author in his work. Fog, wind, water, sand, fire - anything can be an element of Kahn's sculptures and installations!
One of Ned Kahn's most famous works is the moving facades of buildings. The author's idea is quite simple: he places on the facades of houses something like a canvas of thousands of aluminum plates that are set in motion by the wind. It would seem nothing special, but the result is impressive: the wall of a huge building seems to be covered with waves.
And Ned Kahn knows how to create a real tornado on his own! The more than three-meter vortex is created using fans and an ultrasonic smoke machine. The vortex constantly changes shape in response to changes in air currents. These vibrations in the air give the whirlwind a verticality and naturalness.
However, air vortices are not all that a talented master is capable of. In the darkness of one of the Swiss museums, viewers could admire the 6-meter high fiery whirlwind. A pillar of fire rises from a pool filled with kerosene, and with the help of special fans, the flames form a spiral motion. Spectators can watch such a sculpture from a special safe balcony, however, even there, the heat and power of fire is fully felt.
Ned Kahn lives and works in California. In 2003, he received a MacArthur Fellowship, sometimes referred to as a "genius welt." Also in 2005, the author became a laureate of the National Design Awards in the field of environmental design. Kahn's other sculptures can be seen on his website.
