For a long time it was believed that in the Irbit Museum of Fine Arts, a copy of the painting with the title "Entombment" was preserved. And then a few days ago it became known that in reality this is the original painting of the Dutch painter Peter Rubens. Valery Karpov, who is the director of the museum, told about this to the representatives of the news editions. At the same time, he referred to the fact that the Hermitage experts had come to this conclusion when studying the canvas.
During his conversation with journalists, Karpov said that suspicions about the authenticity of the painting arose back in 2016-2017. At this time, the restoration of the canvas was carried out. It was then that experts suggested that this was not a copy, but an original by Rubens. Just a few days ago, the museum was told that the Hermitage experts had confirmed the authenticity of this painting. At the moment, the confirmation is only verbal, but soon the museum should send an official written confirmation of the verification carried out.
The director of the Irbit Museum of Fine Arts said that the painting "The Entombment" was received for safekeeping in 1976. Until that time, it was kept in the Hermitage and all this time it was considered only a copy. It is known that this canvas was painted in 1601 and belongs to the work of the early work of the famous artist. At the time of the painting, Rubens was very young and worked in Italy. This work of art is only a sketch, on the basis of which Rubens later painted a big picture.
It is worth remembering that in the collection of this Museum of Fine Arts, there is another canvas, which was previously considered just a copy. This work is called the penitent Mary Magdalene with her sister Martha. Yes 2012 it was considered a copy, and then recognized as the original. Experts have established that this work was created by the great artist together with his students Jacob Jordaens and Anthony Van Dyck. Rubens wrote the figure of the Magdalene herself.
At the moment, the Hermitage holds about 40 works of the great artist, including 19 sketches and 22 paintings, covering all periods of the work of this world famous artist.
