The Kaliningrad Museum of the World Ocean received an ethnographic collection as a gift from the Russian automotive holding Avtotor. This collection is called "People of the Sea" and is unique. It includes cultural objects created on the islands of Southeast Asia.
This collection was assembled by Hubert Matischek, a German traveler. He spent 30 years of his life collecting this collection. He began collecting these pieces of art in 1960 and finished in 1990. In total, his collection includes more than one thousand objects of religious culture, masks, objects of decorative and applied art, dolls, weapons. This interesting collection, which has no analogues, was acquired by Vladimir Shcherbakov, the founder of Avtotor, in 2015. He acquired it from the German traveler himself, on condition that these works of art would be shown to the general public.
Valuable exhibits were delivered to the Kaliningrad region by sea and manually to the general director of the local Museum of the World Ocean by Shcherbakov himself in a Sivkov container.
It is worth paying attention to the fact that they could not transfer the collection to the Kaliningrad museum at one time. These activities were carried out over three years in three stages, starting in 2016. The main feature of such a transfer is that some unique exhibits require special transportation. The press service of the Avtotor company, during a conversation with representatives of news publications, said that about 100 art objects had arrived in Kaliningrad in the last batch. Among them were exhibits that made up Shcherbakov's private collection, which he spent 25 years collecting.
Visitors wishing to get acquainted with valuable exhibits will be able to see the exposition entitled "People of the Sea" in the exhibition center of the museum on the site called "Amber Hall", which is located in the resort town of Svetlogorsk. Here they can get to know more closely the collection, which includes household items, culture, religions of peoples from the islands of Thailand, Burma, India, Nepal, Laos, Indonesia, China. Here you can see very rare swords, ritual spears and shields of the Asmat, the cannibal tribe. Such items are available in only five museums around the world.
