Pascal Vilcollet is a contemporary artist from France, lives and works in the town of Ponto Combo, near Paris. His new series of works under the name impresses with its scale - the size of each of the paintings is 200x160 cm. It is difficult to perceive all the greatness of the works through the screen image, but the technique in which the artist works will not leave indifferent even the most sophisticated viewer.
Pascal Vicollet was born in Paris in 1979. Graduated from EPSAA - Higher Professional School of Graphic Arts. Pascal's talent manifested itself in childhood, but he really began to write at the age of 16.
“Painting has always been my passion and an integral part of my life. It doesn't matter what tool you have in your hands when you want to express your feelings and emotions on canvases as soon as possible. I can use any paint: gouache, acrylic, pencil, whatever. In such cases, it is necessary to work as quickly as possible in order to bring the result closer to the original idea. I write primarily for my own pleasure. Trying to make a strong impression on the viewer is not the defining goal of my work. I do not strive to create a "clean" portrait, as I have no interest in hyperrealism. I prefer to find the line between reality and abstraction. My favorite subject in painting has always been the face, perhaps it's just an obsession,”says the artist.
- Who was your mentor at the very beginning of your career?
There are many famous artists who have influenced my work, but I have never had a mentor. Now I teach at one of the art schools in Paris, but I myself do not stop learning something new every day. I have a very selective taste: I love Caravaggio's paintings, I highly value the work of Pierre Soulages, and I can also mention our contemporary: Velazquez. - How has your approach to creativity changed over time?
I've always worked really fast. I used to think that you should try not to ask a lot of unnecessary questions and get right to the heart of the matter. Now it takes longer. I can wait for several hours, sitting in front of a white canvas, and think about where to start, in other words, I am not in a hurry as before.
- Do you have a favorite job that you are most proud of?
I have no preference for work. I often say that the next image will be better than the previous ones. This is the incentive that drives me crazy and sometimes makes me do the impossible in the hope of getting full satisfaction from the result of the creative process. As a result, I am proud of the painted picture, and then I move on and strive for something more perfect.
- What project are you working on now?
I would like to keep the intrigue and not reveal all the secrets. I can only say that the new series is much more complex and larger than the previous ones. The format of the series is 400x250 cm. I hope that soon the audience will be able to see it, but in the meantime, working on the project gives me food for thought and, of course, brings incredible pleasure.
A similar painting technique is practiced by the Russian artist Eduard Fleminsky. His original and recognizable style of work has won the respect of colleagues, critics and art lovers alike.
