The Northern Lights are a very rare phenomenon, and are observed only in the most northern (or southernmost, if this is the Southern Hemisphere of the Earth) latitudes. And, thanks to the work of the artist Janet Echelman, something similar to northern lights can be observed over the streets of some cities in the world.
Different artists interpret traditional human crafts in different ways. For example, the Bulgarian artist Veronika Tzekova creates outdoor furniture from yarn in the Italian town of Biella, famous for this type of light industry. And the American Janet Ehelman turns fishing nets into the northern lights.
For the first time she thought about using nets in her works, Janet Ehelman during her trip to India, when she saw how the local fishermen weave their nets from natural, natural materials. And yet, these nets are very strong, large, reliable and incredibly lightweight.
Experimenting with this technology, Ehelman came up with the idea of creating incredible looking aerial sculptures from such networks, made using "Indian technology".
Sculptures by Janet Ehelman, hung with special stretch marks over city streets or inside huge rooms, are very reminiscent of aurora borealis. But not only them. Depending on the angle from which you look at these extraordinary installations, you can see a lot of different things in them. For example, ghosts hovering over the city, jellyfish floating not by sea, but by air, spaceships, solar wind, ship sails and much more. This and the plus of such works by Ehelman - each person can see in them something of their own.
Another big plus is that these sculptures can be easily moved from one place to another.
These works by Janet Ehelman look especially impressive in the dark, when a special lighting system turns the networks hung over the streets into something magical, fabulous, otherworldly, into something from which it is generally impossible to take your eyes off.
