Video: Sculptures by Rene Adams: strange biology
2024 Author: Richard Flannagan | [email protected]. Last modified: 2023-12-15 23:55
Renee Adams makes sculptures of creatures that resemble either some kind of mutants living at the bottom of the sea, or even alien inhabitants. But the sculptor is sure: the more difficult it is to understand what exactly her work is, the more interesting it is to examine and speculate.
Deeply rooted in the biological world, the works of Renee Adams exist as a separate artificial reality. In her works, she seeks to combine various characteristics - anomalous and normal, courageous and fragile, beautiful and ugly - because all of them, according to Rene, are integral parts of our life and coexist with each other.
“Using both natural and artificial materials, I create imaginary hybrid creatures - fragile, charming, at times awkward and strange,” says Renee Adams. According to the author, she is interested in blurring boundaries, creating something indefinite and manipulating meanings, leaving the viewer without a reference.
Many works by Renee Adams touch on the question of the ideals of beauty and how to achieve them by influencing nature and ourselves. The author admits to often looking at the eccentric drawings of German biologist Ernst Haeckel for visual inspiration. “His immortal images of plants, animals and microorganisms depict life forms in the smallest detail,” admires René, who strives for the same precision in her sculptures.
Renee Adams lives in Thorpe, Washington, USA and works at Gallery One Visual Arts Center. She graduated from Central Washington University with a Master of Fine Arts (sculpture). More works of the author are presented on her website.
