In the second half of the twentieth century, the superpowers of the USA and the USSR spent unimaginable money by modern standards on their space programs. Now the space agencies of these countries can only dream of past budgets. Here is an increasingly shrinking NASA budget and is dedicated to Astronaut Suicides Photo Series.
President of the United States of America Barack Obama recently signed a law to significantly cut funding for the country's space programs, because the US budget is already bursting at the seams due to the huge social burden and outer space debt. And this event immediately found its reflection in art. Especially in the work of cartoonists, which we have already told you about in a selection of cartoons dedicated to this problem.
And American photographer Neil Dacosta decided to portray the cuts in the US space budget in a much more serious manner. He decided to consider this problem from the point of view of people involved in space programs, namely, astronauts. This is what a series of his photographs titled Astronaut Suicides is dedicated to.
These photographs depict American astronauts who have fallen into the deepest depression due to unemployment and the loss of meaning in life. Finding themselves in this sad state, they decide to settle scores with their own lives, to commit suicide in various ways. Moreover, do this without taking off your space suits with a pretentious American flag on the chevrons.
Some of the astronauts are going to throw themselves off the roof, some are going to get poisoned by gas from the stove in the kitchen (taking off their helmet in advance) or by the exhaust gases of a car in a closed garage, some are going to shoot themselves, some are going to jump into the water with a stone. on the neck, someone - to crash in a car, crashing into a wall, someone - to hang himself.
Of course, hardly any of the morally and psychologically tough astronauts will really want to do something with themselves due to the decrease in NASA funding. But the problem raised by Neil Dakosta is correct. The problem of further employment of highly professional, but in very narrow areas of activity, people.
