Not so long ago, we talked about a Canadian photographer James Nizame (James Nizam) and his work performed in a non-residential building with a camera obscura. Apparently, abandoned premises have some kind of special atmosphere that you want to plunge into again and again. At least for James, for sure, because his next project is again related to the building intended for demolition.
The new project is called Memorandoms. All photographs taken in apartments at Little Mountain, Vancouver's social housing demolition. The idea of constructing a private building on the site of Little Mountain caused a lot of controversy among Vancouver residents, but residents were still forced to leave their apartments. It was the bare walls of these rooms that James Nizam made the background for all the photographs from Memorandoms.
Against the backdrop of painted walls and parquet floors, James Nizam erects original sculptures from a variety of building materials and fittings abandoned by residents. The author uses everything that only his imagination allows: there are light bulbs, and drawers, and doorknobs … Although the Little Mountain apartments are already empty, the photographer assures that they still have an echo of bygone times and the traces of the owners live in them. The realization that soon all these interiors and sculptures will turn into a heap of rubbish brings some tragedy to photography.
James Nizam is a visual artist based in Vancouver. In 2002 he received his BA from The University of British Columbia. The author's works are exhibited both in his home country and abroad, and are also in private collections.
