What, what are our people made of? Cuban artist Alexi Torres believes that people, or rather, their collective images, are woven from elements of wildlife that can be found everywhere: from feathers, leaves, cobwebs, flowers and blades of grass. Therefore, his amazing paintings, in which he captures the world as he sees it, look as if they were really woven from the finest fibers. A very peculiar way to demonstrate to the public his attitude to environmental problems and appeal to environmental protection, but nevertheless, the artist believes that his paintings are filled with this very meaning. Indeed, the portraits of beautiful pensive girls, whose faces are hidden under carnival masks, resemble images of mythical dryads who protected nature, guarded forests, meadows, parks and squares.
The artist's early works, which are also made in an unusual technique, are inspired not so much by nature as by political and social processes, as well as by bright and strong personalities from the world of science, art, and show business. In the author's portfolio you can find "wicker" paintings depicting Pablo Picasso, Oprah Winfrey, Elvis Presley and many other celebrities.
Today, the Cuban artist lives and works in Atlanta. You can get acquainted with these and other works of the author on his website.
