Galina Volchek, the legendary artistic director of the Sovremennik Theater, passed away more than a year ago. She was known not only as a talented director, but also as an amazing person. Galina Borisovna was practically maternal towards the actors and was proud of the special atmosphere that has always existed in the theater. The manager has always trusted her employees, but sometimes they deceived her trust. A year before her departure, Galina Volchek admitted: Chulpan Khamatova deceived her.
Galina Volchek's version
At the end of 2018, Galina Volchek told in one of her interviews about how Chulpan Khamatova disappointed her. The talented actress was in great demand, and in Sovremennik she appeared on stage in the play Two on a Swing based on the play of the same name by William Gibson.
The production "Two on a swing" was of particular importance for Galina Borisovna, because it was she who became the directorial debut of Galina Volchek in 1962. When, after more than 50 years, she returned to Gibson's work, she immediately decided that Gitel would play Chulpan Khamatova. Kirill Safonov was approved for the role of Jerry. The premiere took place on January 23, 2015 and subsequently the performance was very successful. And then he disappeared from the posters of the theater because of the sabbatical of Chulpan Khamatova.
As it turned out, the actress came to the artistic director of Sovremennik and asked for a six-month break from work, which she needed due to nervous exhaustion. Chulpan Khamatova gave her word to Galina Volchek not to act in films at this time and not to take part in rehearsals and performances in other theaters. She reserved the right to engage exclusively in concert activities, otherwise she simply would not have been able to live these six months with her children. Galina Borisovna agreed with the arguments of the actress and waited for her to go to work. And a month later I learned that Chulpan Khamatova was rehearsing in Riga and Moscow.
Galina Volchek admitted that this news wounded her in the very heart. In a fit of emotions, she even wanted to remove the play from the repertoire altogether, but after that she realized that she had no moral right to do so. She did not want to deceive the viewer who fell in love with the play, and in this case Kirill Safronov would have been left without work in Sovremennik. Then Christina Orbakaite was introduced to the role of Gitel, and the production with her participation sparkled with new colors.
But relations with Chulpan Khamatova were completely ruined. The actress herself for several years remained silent about this and only recently told her version of those events.
Chulpan Khamatova's version
The actress has always treated the artistic director of Sovremennik with love and even trepidation. Chulpan Khamatova appreciated the warm attitude of Galina Volchek and tried not to abuse him. She could come to the rehearsal with her two-month-old daughter and put a stroller with a sleeping baby in Galina Borisovna's office, putting a baby monitor next to her. And when she realized that she was very tired, she asked the manager for a time-out, during which she actually planned to take care of her morale. And then someone told Galina Borisovna that her favorite had allegedly started rehearsals in another theater.
Chulpan Khamatova admits: at that time, in fact, there were plans related to staging the play "Gorbachev" in the Latvian theater. But the trip was planned for a much later date than Volchek reported. Someone took care to stipulate the actress. Moreover, at that time everyone around Galina Borisovna knew how vulnerable the "iron lady" really was. She took such things very personally, was desperately worried and, in fact, was very offended.
When Chulpan Khamatova saw Galina Borisovna's interview with Vladimir Pozner, she was amazed. Everything that the artistic director of Sovremennik said was a jumble of unconfirmed rumors. She was ashamed, she was upset, but at the same time she understood: any excuses would be meaningless in this case.
Galina Volchek always listened to the opinions of her colleagues, treated the actors with sensitivity and understanding, and someone deliberately slandered Chulpan Khamatova, being sure of the negative impact of the initially false news about Khamatova's rehearsals at other venues. And this at a time when the notorious trip to Latvia was to take place only two years later!
At the same time, Chulpan Khamatova emphasizes: she perfectly understands the feelings and emotions of Galina Volchek. She herself is worried when someone does not keep their promises. But that situation has nothing to do with the love that has always existed between the legendary artistic director and the actress herself. And this love will not go anywhere until the end of Chulpan Nailevna's life.
It is a pity only for those precious hours and minutes that could be spent on warm communication and productive work in the theater.
Galina Volchek, a real iron lady and a man with a huge heart, began her service in the theater with Oleg Tabakov, Oleg Efremov, Igor Kvasha and Evgeny Evstigneev. She received the USSR State Prize when she was only 33 years old. Many of the best theatrical roles of Valentin Gaft, Marina Neyelova, Elena Yakovleva, Chulpan Khamatova, Sergei Garmash came out thanks to Volchek. And it was under her leadership that Sovremennik was the first foreign theater to receive the prestigious American Drama Desk award.
