Almost 10 years Elisha Bomelius was near Ivan the Terrible. Some called him a physician and astrologer, others - a charlatan and adventurer. The chroniclers called Bomelia only "the fierce sorcerer". Even the most fierce guardsmen were afraid of him, not to mention the rest of the tsar's entourage, because the "doctor" could instantly send anyone who did not please the sovereign to him.
Eliseus Bomelius was born in Westphalia in 1530 in the family of the Lutheran preacher Heinrich Bomelius. From his youth, Elizeus was attracted to medicine. He entered the University of Cambridge in the Department of Medicine, but never completed his studies. However, this did not stop Bomelius from opening his own practice in London and treating everyone for a reasonable fee. However, a few years later, the "doctor" was arrested, accused of practicing witchcraft.
Thanks to the efforts of his patron Lady Willoughby, Bomelius managed to escape the death penalty. It was at that time that the ambassadors of Ivan the Terrible, headed by Andrei Savin, were in London. In addition to diplomatic affairs, he was looking for a doctor for the king. It is not known for certain how Elizaus managed to convince the ambassador, but he went to Russia in the status of a physician at court.
In Russia, Eliseus Bomelius changed his name to the Russian manner - Elisha Bomelius. He quickly attracted the attention of Ivan the Terrible and earned his favor, because he knew how not only to heal, but also engaged in potion-making, from which all the enemies of the tsar very quickly and quietly went to the next world. He often whispered in the ear of the sovereign:
According to rumors, the poisoning of the streltsy governor Fyodor Myasoedov and the second wife of Ivan IV, Maria Temryukova, was not without Bomeliya.
In the annals of 1570, when Bomelius arrived, it was already written ""
It is known that Elisha Bomelius was fond of astrology. He often climbed the bell tower of the Kremlin Church of John Climacus to look at the location of the heavenly bodies, and the common people were baptized in horror:
Everyone at the court fiercely hated the "evil sorcerer". They wrote all sorts of denunciations against him both in Latin and Greek, accused of having connections with the kings of Poland and Sweden, but the tsar still trusted the doctor.
But in 1579 Ivan the Terrible ordered Bomelius to predict the future of his family. He, as usual, put his hands to the crystal ball and suddenly curled up in convulsions. He began to predict that the second wife of the tsar's eldest son would die in childbirth, and that Ivan IV would personally kill Tsarevich himself. Sons Fyodor and Dmitry will also die before their father. The Rurik clan will not continue, and there will be unrest.
The king was furious. After the terrible words of Bomelia, he threw a silver goblet at him, so hard that he lay unconscious for three days. Then the "doctor" realized that he needed to run away, conspired with the Pskov boyars and tried to hide. But the escape failed: Bomelia was seized and taken back to the king.
The disgraced "doctor" was tortured in such a way that he confessed that he wanted to exterminate both the Tsar and the whole of Mother Russia. First, Bomelia was sent to the rack, and then he was roasted alive on a spit. However, the terrible prophecy of the adventurer turned out to be fatal for Ivan the Terrible.
Elisha Bomeliya was even afraid "The sovereign's faithful dog" Malyuta Skuratov, whose name has become synonymous with cruelty and ruthlessness.
