Initially, the novellas bore the common name "Frivolous Stories" and there were only two of them, and the name of the protagonist was Vladik Arkov. First of all, at the request of the censorship committee, Vladik (Vladlen) was renamed Shurik (his role was played by Alexander Demyanenko). After all, it was impossible to allow a humorous character to receive the name of the leader of the world proletariat.
It is interesting that Leonid Gaidai pondered for a long time what the main character should be. It turned out that he looked like him. That is why, when he saw the photo of Alexander Demyanenko, the director did not doubt for a minute: a tall guy with glasses had a striking resemblance to him. Ungainly and very good-natured by nature, Demyanenko brilliantly played the main role in all three short stories.
In general, the censorship has repeatedly "rejected" the content of the film. The Goonies' song "Wait, steam locomotive …" was perceived sharply negatively. Gaidai cut out one of the verses of the thug hit, only after that the censorship changed from anger to mercy. Some comic episodes were also not to my liking. So, the film was assigned category 2 for the fact that the director refused to exclude episodes when the "black" Verzila chased Shurik and when the students passed the exam. After the film was released, the general director of "Mosfilm" V. Surin stood up for the film, after his letter to the Ministry of Culture, the tape was assigned 1 category.
During the filming, the team was unlucky with the weather, constantly had to move in search of favorable conditions. Baku, Odessa, Yalta, Moscow, Leningrad … Winter scenes were filmed, of course, in the Northern capital, but the circumstances played a cruel joke on the filmmakers. On December 14, 10 snow dump trucks were brought to the set, but it… melted before the start of work. So I had to replace it with cotton wool and mothballs.
Many humorous scenes were born by accident: for example, Gaidai came up with a tragic note in the episode with fencing (the fight looked very academic, it was decided to portray a blood-wine wound when Shurik stabbed Goonies with a sword.
