In the eastern part Congo has been going for several decades Civil War, an interethnic conflict, the victims of which are generation after generation. It is from this corner of the world that the Irish photographer Richard Mosse and brought a series of landscapes shown in infrared color palette.
Eastern Congo is a land of amazing beauty, one of the most beautiful corners of Africa. But tourists are extremely rare there - it's all the fault of the civil war, tearing apart this land in recent decades. Therefore, the beauty there is inextricably linked with the horrors of conflict, with blood and shooting.
However, the dangers of this region do not prevent the Irish photographer Richard Mosse from traveling there from year to year. He is one of the people thanks to whom the world generally knows about the existence of this place and the bloody conflict playing out there.
Richard Mosse has already created several series of photographs in which he tells the public about the events in Eastern Congo. In one of his projects, the artist showed people participating in the civil war or suffering because of it. In his new works, he focused on the natural beauty of these lands.
However, you will not see the lush greenery growing in these places in Mosse's photographs. After all, they are made in an infrared palette - Richard takes pictures using the very rare Kodak Aerochrome technology, at one time created to detect targets in aerial bombardments.
Thus, the photographer shows the basis of life in Eastern Congo, where civil conflict has been stuck in the minds of people for many years, becoming an integral part of their life, without which their very existence is already difficult to imagine. And even the natural beauty in this picturesque corner of the world can only be viewed through a military filter.
Richard Mosse himself says that he even has to take photographs under the protection of armed guards - without it, he would have long ago become another victim of the civil war in a region where notions of power and anarchy, of good and evil have long been blurred.
