They say that a talented person is talented in everything. And the Englishwoman Mandy Smith successfully combines two related professions: she is an artist and a designer in one person. As you know, talent, multiplied by diligence and imagination, can bring amazing creative results. In the recent past, everyone was impressed by her project called The Paper House, to which the artist was inspired by the atmosphere and architecture of Amsterdam. Today she conquered everyone with amusing mini-sculptures made of … sandpaper.
Mandy uses simple materials in her work: paper, foam, cardboard … However, her visual solutions make you forget about the seeming simplicity of the components - the complex and thoughtful design of Smith's works is amazing.
Often, Smith draws inspiration from everyday and simple things, however, sometimes she is not averse to fantasizing. For example, her amazing sculptures are often used to create animated films and theatrical performances that take the viewer to fantasy and magical worlds.
Immediately after successfully graduating from London's Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, one of the oldest design universities in the world, Mandy began a creative boom. She worked on a critically acclaimed short film, designed dolls for Tim Burton's Frankenweenie, and worked extensively with such giants as Coca-Cola, Waterstones and Velvet.
The ironic project with the self-explanatory name "Sandpaper" is the result of a creative tandem between Mandy and photographer Bruno Drummond. A number of mini-sculptures are offered to the viewer's judgment, entirely made of material that would rather be useful to painters than to designers. The ordinary objects used in everyday life, as interpreted by Smith and Drummond, take on a somewhat sinister connotation, although, of course, it is balanced by the brilliant sense of humor of the Englishwoman.
