In the heart of London many sculptures have been installed, the overwhelming majority of which depict great people of the past - kings and queens, politicians, military leaders. And more recently, along with them, it costs big blue rooster figurecreated by the artist Katharina Fritsch … Trafalgar Square, in front of London's National Gallery, boasts four huge pedestals, three of which are occupied by the figures of King George IV, as well as Generals Henry Havelock and Charles James Napieru. But the fourth, built in 1841, has been a place for an exhibition of works by contemporary artists for the last few years.
Back in 1999, on the so-called "Fourth Pedestal" there appeared not a classical figure of a great man, but an avant-garde sculpture of Christ ("Ecce Homo") by the artist Mark Wallinger. Since then, this pedestal has been visited by almost a dozen works by contemporary authors, the last of which, until recently, was a boy on a toy horse, created by Michael Elmgrin and Ingar Dragset. But he also had to leave this wonderful place the other day, because a new sculpture appeared there!
This is a work titled Hahn / Cock, conceived and realized by the German artist Katharina Fritsch. This sculpture is a huge, five-meter rooster, painted blue.
The author views this giant bird as a metaphor for the awakening, rebirth and power of the humanist ideology, of which Katarina Fritsch herself is an active supporter. “People can see in animals a reflection of themselves and their own character,” she explains.
In addition, the sculpture symbolizes the dynamism of London, as well as the creativity and sense of humor that characterize this city.
The Hahn / Cock sculpture by Katharina Fritsch will adorn the Fourth Pedestal in London's Trafalgar Square over the next eighteen months.
