Usually monuments are erected to people for some special merits. There are also several statues of dogs in the world, for example, White Bim Black Ear or Hachiko. But in a Dutch town Nieuwerkerk a gigantic monument … muskrat!
The artist Florentijn Hofman is already known to the readers of the site Culturology. RF thanks to his installations in the form of a giant yellow hare in the Swedish city of Orebro and a huge recumbent monkey in São Paulo. His new work also has a huge size and animal nature. But, this time, Hoffman portrayed a muskrat.
The installation in the form of a muskrat was installed in the Dutch town of Nieuwerkerk, in an area considered to be the lowest in the whole Netherlands (almost 7 meters below sea level).
The very existence of this place is possible thanks to a system of dams that shield the land from the advancing sea. And muskrats are destroying these hydraulic structures, thereby endangering the life of many Dutch settlements.
In order to illustrate the seriousness of this problem, Florentin Hoffmann created this sculpture in the shape of a giant muskrat!
The dimensions of this extraordinary muskrat-like sculpture are 32 meters long, 12 meters wide and 8 meters high. It is clear that this is the largest muskrat that has ever existed in the world. Even artificial!
This gigantic muskrat installation is made of a timber frame covered with thatch. All materials are of local origin, taken from the town of Nieuwerkerk and its surroundings.
I must admit that it is rather strange to erect a monument to a pest that endangers the existence of entire regions of the Netherlands!
