L. J. Le Rolland originally from the industrial town of Newcastle; perhaps out of a sense of contradiction, he is drawn to the mysterious thickets and unexplored fantasy worlds. The young talented graphic artist is inspired by, by his own admission, "the mythology of Northern Europe and the English wastelands."
"Magic is hidden somewhere in the middle between what is familiar to us in everyday reality, and what has long since become a thing of the past and what is commonly called myth," Le Rolland says. The heroes of the artist's works are people and creatures who, with equal success, could appear in the "Elder Edda" and in Tolkien's "Silmarillion": witches, dragons, sorcerers and warriors. Le Rolland's works evoke one more parallel, which was not foreseen by the artist himself: they are very similar to the wonderful works of Soviet artists who illustrated children's books and classics from the "School Library" series.
Le Rolland, of course, turns to mythology and the fantasy genre, but above all reminds viewers of the magic of our real nature. This explains the artist's keen interest in botany. Among his drawings are several images of beautiful flowers, whose main properties and characteristics Le Rolland himself describes with love on his website.
Not all serious art connoisseurs and literary critics agree on their assessment of fantasy as an independent genre. But artists are constantly turning to this style: someone rethinks fantasy in a humorous way, like Lior Arditi, someone crosses with the baroque, like Sean Murray … Briton LJ Le Rolland stands out on this list: like the founders of fantasy style, he is keenly interested in medieval mythology, and his ultimate goal is not just to "play" spectacular images, but to draw the audience's attention to the natural beauty that surrounds everyone.
