In search of inspiration, artists, sculptors and other people of art often turn to the creative heritage of famous maestros, absorbing their muse, mood, and lyrics. As a result, we talk about the strong influence of one or another master on the work of a modern author, and sometimes we can see with our own eyes what kind of master this author took as his teacher. These are imitations of famous masterpieces such as the Mona Lisa, which has gone through dozens of parodies and recreations. A portfolio of a young Korean artist Kyu-hak lee consists precisely of imitations of famous paintingsmade from pieces of wood and newsprint. The most famous paintings by Van Gogh, Gauguin and other painters, the artist recreates in the so-called mixed media technique, which combines mosaic, installation and application, and requires much more materials for creativity than ordinary painting, installation, mosaic. So, to simulate brush strokes, Kyu-Hak Lee uses thin and long wooden pegs, and to add color to them, wraps the pegs with colored pages from newspapers and magazines. And then he adds the resulting "puzzle", achieving maximum accuracy with the original.
"Chair" by Gauguin, "Chair" by Van Gogh, "Irises" and, of course, "Starry Night", which after La Gioconda is the second most popular painting for all sorts of parodies and imitations, is just a short list of famous paintings processed by the Korean artist in her own individual manner. and technology. And these large-scale paintings-installations of her are so curious and original that the galleries and salons in which exhibitions of wood-and-paper imitations are held are very popular.
Kyu-Hak Lee lives and works in Seoul, where she received her specialized education and an artist diploma. You can see a selection of her unusual paintings-installations on the Yesong gallery website.
