What new can be brought to such an ancient sphere of arts and crafts as handicrafts? The search for themes, forms and, most importantly, materials does not stop. Artist Adrienne antonson from Seattle, she found both an unusual theme and non-standard material: she makes insect figurines out of … human hair.

Both hair and insects are not at all as simple as we used to think. In distant primitive times, a person was used to seeing in creeping insects and cockroaches the personification of the ancient, chthonic forces of the Earth, its mysterious power - and at the same time the reflection of death. Hair, on the other hand, is a favorite object of primitive sympathetic magic, because, according to legends, they are in a constant mystical connection with a person (which is why, say, a voodoo doll must be stuffed with a little hair belonging to the target person). That is why the combination of these meaning-laden archetypes looks somewhat intimidating for a modern person.

However, if you think about it, there is nothing wrong with these unusual insects. The texture of human hair, deliberately preserved and emphasized by the artist, immediately attracts attention. The use of such material is really interesting and promising. Although graphics using hair already exist, and have even been described by us, they are quite different from what does Adrienne antonson.

Of course, the search for new materials without a meaningful idea is a parasite on the body of art. However, there is such an idea in the artist's work, even if we do not take into account the psychological mechanism we have discovered. Adrienne antonson does not forget that she works with what she says is "the most direct and true" material. That is why her unusual insects are surprisingly similar to human hairstyles, and sometimes faces - and as if pouring part of a person's soul into the image of a six-legged booger. How can we not recall Franz Kafka's "The Metamorphosis"?

But let's not ascribe unnecessary social and philosophical ideas to the artist. It is enough that her works evoke a genuine response - isn't that the purpose of art?
