China is an amazing country with many surprises for curious tourists. Having been here, you should not only look at the Great Wall of China or admire the Summer Imperial Palace in Beijing, but also be sure to see with your own eyes the pearl of the Middle Kingdom - Qiandao, or the Lake of a Thousand Islands. This man-made natural wonder with 1,078 islands was formed after the construction of a hydroelectric power plant in Zhejiang province!
The lake itself is famous for the purity of its waters; the famous Nongfu Spring mineral water is even extracted here. Much more interesting, however, is what is at the bottom of the reservoir! Many years ago, Chun'an and Suyan counties were located on the territory that was flooded during the construction of the hydroelectric power station. Both were the center of the country's political, economic and cultural life.
Along with these two counties, another 27 cities, 1,377 villages, as well as almost 50,000 acres of agricultural land and thousands of houses went under water. The government had to relocate about 290,000 people, but the construction task was paramount.
Surprisingly, nature has kept the underwater cities imperishable. It was not difficult for scuba divers to find many traces of civilization. Unfortunately, the local authorities are not making attempts to save the unique cultural monument, despite numerous photos, which clearly show that this underwater world can become a wonderful tourist attraction!
