In a tiny African village called Tiebele people build houses in the same way as their ancestors did for the last five hundred years. The unique tradition of wall painting is also alive and well. The inhabitants of this small town manage to preserve all the richness of culture, despite numerous difficulties.

The village is famous for its traditional Gurunsi architecture and artfully painted walls. Small houses are literally sculpted using the materials available nearby: wood, clay, straw and dung. Once dry, they become durable and waterproof. When building, the defensive ability of structures is always taken into account, so the thickness of the walls usually reaches half a meter, and the windows and doors are made as narrow as possible.

When the house is built, the process of decorating the walls begins. This is a collective action, but only women are allowed to participate in it. Drawings are applied using multi-colored mud and chalk. The content can be very different: from everyday motives to high religious symbols. The finished drawing is carefully polished with stones and covered with natural varnish made from a decoction of the beans from the nere tree. As a result of this work, the walls will be protected during the rainy season, but next year they will need another thorough renovation.

Architectural traditions Tiebele seem primitive if you measure them by the standards of buildings made of concrete and plastic. But the latest building culture provides compelling examples that many ancient techniques are in great demand, be it clay houses or ice igloos.
