The tradition of making portable nurseries around Christmas dates back to several centuries in Krakow. Over time, special christmas art making shops reached extraordinary heights: the details of the nursery were made in the form of the most famous temples in Krakow, pasted over with expensive gold foil … After all, during the mystery, the Madonna and Child will lie in the nursery - which means you have to match!
Since 1927, it has been decided to hold christmas competition the most beautiful shop. The competition almost immediately became a hallmark of Krakow: dozens of craftsmen brought their handmade creches to the central square of the Old Town, and the jury chose the best ones. During the difficult years of the war, the competition, of course, was not held - but in 1945 it was revived by the Krakow Historical Museum.
Despite the general crisis of traditional religions, Catholicism is very strong in Poland - therefore, the competition not only does not die away, but, on the contrary, pleases Krakow residents with more and more amazing shops. The unusual Christmas competition takes place on the first Thursday of December. And on the 25th, the time comes to play out the mystery of the birth of Jesus Christ in this manger.
