Amy Sol paints delicate, whimsical, fantasy worlds. Dreamy girls live in these worlds, surrounded by exotic plants, nonexistent trees, fogs, clouds and outlandish flowers. However, fragile girls are not the only inhabitants of the artist's paintings. Animals are sure to be near them, and not as pets or wild predators, but rather as friends or even family members.
Folk art, manga, vintage illustrations and modern design have greatly influenced the style of Amy Saul's work. It is all the more surprising that the artist did not study the art of painting, preferring to study everything on her own. Amy spent a lot of time mixing colors and shades before achieving the desired muted tones in which her paintings are sustained.
The artist paints mainly on wood, calling it her favorite material, and she manages to organically incorporate its texture into her work. Despite spending her childhood in Korea, Amy does not see the influence of Korean art as dominant in her work. “I draw inspiration from many cultures: Chinese, Japanese, Middle Eastern and European. I am open to all sources of influence and in my paintings I depict their own interpretation."
As people who inspire her, Amy names the artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries: Jesse Wilcox Smith, Charles Robinson and Kai Nielsen. She writes pictures most often at night, finishing in the morning. The artist always examines her work in the sunlight and only then goes to bed. Amy usually works about 12 hours a day.
Amy Sol was born and spent her childhood in Korea, then moved to Las Vegas, where she lives and works now. More of the artist's work can be seen on her personal website.
