Next year, Italy and the Italian diaspora around the world will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the country's unification in 1861. An unusual art project Sessantuna, carried out by the artist Gaetano Pesce, is dedicated to this event. There are sixty-one tables, each of which denotes a historical site in Italy.
Together, these sixty-one tables form a huge map of Italy, measuring 25 meters by 20 meters. On each of these tables is written the name of the area, island or city that played a role in the unification of the country. Accordingly, they stand in their respective places on the map.
Five of these anniversary tables will be auctioned in London and New York, cities where many ethnic Italians live. The rest will go to online auctions, which will run from this summer to June 2, 2011 (June 2, Italy celebrates Republic Day).
