Paris cannot be imagined without the Eiffel Tower, New York - without the Statue of Liberty, Moscow - without the Kremlin, and London - without fogs, no matter if they are natural or caused by human activity. It is precisely the London fogs that is dedicated to installation Urban Fog, exhibited by the Atelier Chanchan collective in East London.
Fog is an integral companion of modern large cities. Hundreds of thousands of cars, factories, factories - they all release so much substances into the atmosphere that a very noticeable haze appears over the cities. And cities that are in a hollow or in a humid climate especially suffer from smog. The latter include, for example, London.
Moreover, regular smog and fogs are quite common phenomena in London, to which city residents are accustomed, with which they have learned to live, practically not noticing these changes in nature. But guests of the city perceive it in a completely different way. And how exactly they see life in London is shown in the installation Urban Fog by Atelier Chanchan.
As part of the installation, the guys from Atelier Chanchan blocked a long tapering corridor with several walls made of translucent beige paper. Moreover, they blocked it at different angles, creating a network of labyrinths, along which visitors were invited to move, carefully looking around.
However, it is not necessary to constantly move. It is possible and the network to sit or stand still. The main thing is to concentrate on your visual sensations, and indeed on your feelings in general. After all, beige translucent paper, designed to imitate London fogs and smog, strongly affects the human senses, disorients him, and puts him into a state of panic. And it takes some time to get used to the visual changes in the space proposed by Atelier Chanchan as part of the Urban Fog installation. Although the guys from Atelier Chanchan are still very far in terms of playing with light and disorientation, they are a real master in this matter - the Swede Olafur Eliasson.
