Thailand Is such a fantastic country that some of the phenomena encountered by European travelers may seem simply absurd to them. For example, Maeklong marketlocated 37 kilometers west of Bangkok. Immediately after the train has passed, the market revives again, as if nothing had happened at all. To the natural question of why not transfer trade to another place, the local residents had a quite obvious answer: the market has been here from time immemorial, and the railway line was built only in 1905. The Thai people call this market “Talad Rom Hoop Market”, which literally means “market of dropping awnings”, because sellers have to cover their goods several times a day.
