On January 31, People's Artist of Russia Vera Glagoleva could have turned 64, but she has been dead for 3 years already. She played about 50 film roles, directed 7 films. Glagoleva made her film debut at the age of 20, but believed that she was born as an actress only 10 years later, when she performed the main role in the melodrama "Marry the Captain". Why this role became iconic for her, why the script was put on the shelf for several years, and how the director managed to complete his plan - further in the review.

The script for the film was written in 1980 by screenwriter and playwright Valentin Chernykh, who was then at the peak of popularity after creating the script for the film Moscow Does Not Believe in Tears. However, his new work did not impress the management of the Lenfilm film studio - it seemed to them that the image of the protagonist, border guard Alexander Belov, was not heroic enough, flat and lacking in ideas, because he did not perform feats, did not catch criminals at the border, did not risk his life, did not win awards … The story of how the commander of the frontier post was looking for a wife while on vacation, in their opinion, was too shallow and insipid. And they put the script on the shelf.

Three years later, this script caught the eye of director Vitaly Melnikov, known for the films "Mom Got Married", "Seven Brides of Corporal Zbruev", "Hello and Goodbye" and "Elder Son". At that time, he experienced a creative crisis: his film "Vacation in September" based on Vampilov's play "Duck Hunt" was put on the shelf immediately after the premiere and was shown only 8 years later, 2 more of his works went unnoticed. And when Melnikov started filming the melodrama "Marry the Captain", he no longer even hoped for the success of the film.

To obtain permission to shoot, Melnikov had to re-justify the need to create a film about a border guard officer who did not impress the Lenfilm leadership. According to the director, the main argument for launching this scenario was to increase the prestige of the military. And after the introduction of Soviet troops into Afghanistan, this was really necessary then. Therefore, the story of an honest and noble officer who remains faithful to his principles in civilian life and protects a fragile woman looked quite relevant at that time. Melnikov was convincing, and he was allowed to start filming.

Vera Glagoleva was one of the three main contenders for the role of photojournalist Elena Zhuravleva. In addition to her, Natalia Danilova and Elena Safonova passed the tests. Glagoleva was brought to audition by the playwright himself - this is how he imagined the heroine of his play. Later she said: "".

Melnikov persuaded the playwright to remake the script and leave only one love line - the heroine Vera Glagoleva. The director recalled: "". Glagoleva did not have a professional acting education, but she was very sincere, touching and organic in the frame, which was what the director needed. By that time, she had been acting in films for 10 years and was quite a popular actress, but it was this role that brought her wide popularity. For this work, Glagoleva was recognized as the best actress in 1986 according to the results of a survey of readers of the magazine "Soviet Screen" and after that she became one of the most sought-after actresses of the second half of the 1980s.

One of the roles - the scandalous neighbor, the former boss - was played by Nikolai Rybnikov, but most of the audience did not recognize him. By that time, the star of "Spring on Zarechnaya Street" and "Girls" had not played prominent roles for a long time - the era of other heroes had come, and everyone forgot about him. Rybnikov felt very hard about his lack of demand and was glad of the opportunity presented by Melnikov to appear on the screens again. But the audience did not recognize the first handsome Soviet cinema of the 1950s-1960s in the noticeably older and plump neighbor of the main character. However, Rybnikov coped with his role brilliantly and in 1986 was recognized as the best supporting actor.

The shooting took place in 1983 in Dnepropetrovsk and Novomoskovsk, some episodes were filmed in Adjara, at a real border post - therefore, not actors, but border guards were involved in the crowd. The premiere took place in 1986. The film was a success among viewers - 11.5 million people watched it. "To marry a captain" was shown in all military units and garrisons, and it earned particular popularity among border guards.

Unfortunately, the life of the actress ended abruptly and prematurely: What the "woman without age" did not have time to do Vera Glagoleva.
