Perhaps, if American school buses were animate creatures, each of them would like to "skate" the deadline as soon as possible and go on a well-deserved rest. And not out of an idle desire to relax, but due to the fact that after honestly worked ten years (or 150,000 miles of run), nondescript yellow buses are being auctioned. Often they are bought by entrepreneurs from Mexico, Guatemala or other Central American countries. In the hands of the new owners, buses acquire not only a "second life", but also a fantastic coloring!
Note that the tradition of decorating public transport is not new. On our website Culturology.ru we have already written about the positive public transport of the Philippines and about the unusual trams of Hong Kong. But the buses that can be seen on Guatemalan roads are distinguished not only by their extraordinary coloring, but also by their unusual name. Locals and numerous tourists call them nothing more than "Chicken basses", or "Chicken buses".
The reason for such an unusual name is simple: local villagers often transport on the roofs of buses … chickens, baskets with chickens and cages with roosters. Of course, such an unusual tradition could not go unnoticed by tourists. In each bus, in addition to the driver, there is also an assistant (ayudante), whose duties include not only collecting money for travel, but also placing luggage (suitcases, livestock or food) on the roof of the bus.
The coloring of each bus is unique, as it suits the tastes of the driver. Often, on public transport, you can see things that are completely incompatible at first glance: images of sultry beauties can flaunt next to quotes from the Bible and the face of Jesus.
By the way, taking a ride on such a bus is not easy. There is no definite timetable for the movement of public transport; it all depends on how populated certain areas are. It is best to wait for the Chicken Bass at the bus station.

Ice trams in St. Petersburg: Public transport 100 years ago on the frozen Neva
At the end of the 19th century, an electric tram was launched in St. Petersburg, but it did not travel on ordinary land, but on ice, on which rails were installed. Thus, the organizers of the route managed to bypass the monopolists who owned horse trams in the city, because formally these companies owned transportation on the city land, and "ice trams" carried passengers along the Neva. Now it is difficult to imagine, but the winters in the city were so long and harsh that this type of transport provided
Painted subway of Amsterdam. Art project Amsterdam Public Transport Company
The metro during rush hours is a dull and sometimes eerie sight. A crowd of sleepy passengers in the morning, and tired, and therefore aggressive and angry, in the evening, does not contribute to the emergence of a good mood in those who slept in the morning and were not tired in the evening. Therefore, the Amsterdam Public Transport Company has conceived an unusual art project to turn subway cars into works of art, hoping to please the customers of the subway at least so
Unusual public transport: double-decker trams - the symbol of Hong Kong
Public transport, along with famous landmarks, can often be the hallmark of a city. For example, it is difficult to imagine the streets of the Philippines without the brightly colored Jeepney buses or London - without the branded red double-decker buses. Once upon a time in the UK (as well as in New Zealand and Australia), double-decker trams were also popular, however, over time they were decommissioned. But in Hong Kong they can be seen to this day, they have become a real symbol
Bright colors: Jeepney bus - positive public transport from the Philippines
Public transport is often perceived as a sheer punishment by all who are forced to use it regularly. Constant crush, traffic jams, grandmothers with wallets and students with backpacks - stress, and that's all! The complete opposite of our transport is the Philippine Jeepney bus, the passengers of which get a lot of pleasure from their appearance alone. Amazing design makes them a real decoration of city streets
Such creative buses
Many buses or other forms of public transport in developed countries are covered with advertisements, both inside and out. Sometimes it looks shabby and ugly, and sometimes this ad can be a real work of art. After all, no one prevents creators from approaching its creation creatively
