Video: Gavin Nolan's terrifying portraiture
2024 Author: Richard Flannagan | [email protected]. Last modified: 2023-12-15 23:55
Paintings by artist Gavin Nolan are terrifying, disturbing, wrong, contradictory. And with these influential and "dark" works, the emerging talent took its rightful place in the big arena of art.
It is very difficult to say who exactly Gavin Nolan portrays - whether people, or zombies, and why he paints such aesthetically unattractive defective portraits. One gets the impression that the author's inspiration comes from the other world. There is an opinion that Gavin Nolan does not depict people themselves, but their inner world, evil that lives inside a person and, if possible, breaks out, distorting the external appearance of an attractive person.
Born Gavin Nolan in 1977 in Wales, he graduated from the School of the Arts at the University of Loughborough, as well as the Royal Academy of Arts. The artist holds exhibitions of his work in London, Berlin, Naples, Copenhagen and Tokyo. His latest show, titled “Hexen Reflex,” is on display at the Mark Moore Gallery in Los Angeles from May 2 to July 3.
