John Sokol, an artist from the American state of Ohio, decided to please all connoisseurs of good literature. Three years ago, he first presented to the general public a series of portraits of famous writers called Word portraits. Each portrait is composed of quotes taken from the most significant works of the authors selected by the artist.
Lines from the most significant works of world famous writers and poets recreate their facial features, draw wrinkles, lay shadows on the cheekbones … Although it is still possible to distinguish individual words, reading the entire encrypted text is an overwhelming task even for true lovers of literature.
The series includes portraits of such famous writers as Henrik Ibsen (the image is compiled from the lines of his famous play "Hedda Gubler"), Jorge Luis Borges (the story "The Secret Miracle"), Bernard Shaw (the play "Arms and Man"), Dante Alighieri ("The Divine Comedy"), James Joyce (the famous novel "Ulysses") and many others. There is also a rather successful portrait of US President Barack Obama in the series (speech "A More Perfect Union", delivered by him in March 2008).
John Sokol was born in the small town of Canton, Ohio in 1947. Graduated from Kent State University in 1973. Since 1974 he has been participating in art exhibitions. The first John Falcon exhibition took place in Cleveland. Today, his works are kept in many galleries and museums in the United States. In addition to his main activity, Sokol writes poetry, is fond of abstract sculpture and teaches.
You can also admire the collection of two hundred and fifty rare photographs of famous writers and poets by purchasing the collection Writers: Literary Lives in Focus, which was released this fall. V a series of interesting photographs you can find pictures of Vladimir Nabokov, engaged in catching butterflies, and Aldous Huxley, frozen in a jump.
