The animal welfare associations operating in Switzerland have drawn up a petition and sent it to the Federal Council. This petition calls for a ban on the use of wild animals in circuses.

The petition, called "No use of wild animals in the circus", has already been signed by 70,676 Swiss citizens. The initiators of the creation of such a petition were foundations and public organizations: "Four Paws", "Animals and the Law", "For Animals". In their petition, they appeal to the Swiss government to take seriously the issue of banning the use of wild animals in the circus. At the same time, they note that a clear list of animals should be drawn up that should not take part in the performances and all representatives of the wildlife should be included in it.

Animal welfare organizations noted that circuses can create interesting programs that are attractive to viewers without the use of animals. As an example, they cite the world-famous circus Cirque du Soleil, which always attracts a lot of spectators to its performances.

The authors of this petition, during a press conference held in Zurich, noted that life in the circus is very harmful to wild animals. All distance from nature, closeness to humans, life in cages, the need for frequent travel from place to place have a negative effect on them. It was also noted that not all circuses keep animals in good conditions, and this is because, according to the laws of Switzerland, their keeping in circuses can be worse than keeping them in zoos.

Not everyone was happy with this petition. Oliver Skreinig, director of Cirque Royal, felt that animal advocates were not doing the right thing when they were dividing animals into wild animals, which should not be performed in the circus, and domestic animals. He also said that all animals are part of the circus family and are well treated.

Previously, the ban on the use of animals in the circus was adopted in Finland, Peru, Denmark, Bulgaria, Sweden, etc. In total, such a ban is in effect in 20 countries. True, there are animals that, even with a ban, can still be attracted to circus performances, for example, in Finland and Singapore, you can show numbers with sea lions, and in Denmark - with llamas, camels and elephants.
