Advertising is the engine of progress. This truth has been known for a long time. Each era had its own ways of advertising. In the United States at the end of the 19th century, there was such a way of promoting goods as "women-banners." Ladies walked the streets and, as they say, showed the goods with their faces. In short, the women's dresses were hung with the items they advertised. It's worth noting that this method worked.
In the 1870s and 90s, a rather original method of advertising appeared, which was called "banner lady". The women hired for this activity put on dresses on which all kinds of spoons, pretzels, springs, and tools hung. Ladies - "billboards" looked like Christmas trees. They walked in this form through the streets, attracting potential buyers.
As it turned out, this advertising method was quite effective. Clients looked at women in unusual outfits with pleasure and went straight to trade shops or pastry shops. Actresses or ladies of easy virtue agreed to work as "banners".
Savvy traders were not limited to just "parades" of walking "billboards". Girls and women were photographed, postcards were made with their image and handed out to clients.
It is quite amusing for modern laypersons to consider advertising techniques 100 years ago. In Russia at the beginning of the twentieth century, the main sources of advertising were newspaper ads that vividly demonstrated the interests of the people of the time.
