This year in the French city of Montpellier, the fifth Festival of Living Architecture, organized by the association, was held. Festival participants worked with sculptures and installations on the theme "Between Light and Shadow". The works themselves were exhibited in the courtyards of old French establishments, and we will consider some of them.
The first photo shows the winning installation. The work took first place, as it shocked the judges with its integrity. The combination of materials "mirror and smoke" is not often found, but the architects from Nancy turned out exactly as others expected: mysterious and amazing.
In addition to the winner himself, the judges chose several more works by novice architects. One of them is the installation "Truthehole" by the Italian artist Splace (Splice). He says that the key points in architecture are light and shadow. The main thing in his work is the perception of light. The work can only be seen thanks to a clever architectural trick called a "keyhole". The reception is so named because you can see the "Truthehole" only by going through a long tunnel at the entrance to the mansion. There are reflective panels in the tunnel, on which parts of the sculpture are visible, but it is fully visible only in the next room.
"Ombre en Lumière" is a mystery installation. Its name is translated from French as "shadow", which very succinctly explains its meaning. Every day the weather changes, the sun shines differently, but it always forms shadows. The entire installation consists of objects suspended in the air, which, exactly once a day, cast a shadow on the ground in the form of the word "Ombre" on the ground.
The "Up Sky Down" installation consists of black balloons floating near the ceiling, tied to the floor with white threads. The author of the installation plunged into childhood and tries to tell as much as possible about it, reminding adults that sometimes you can enjoy just looking at the clouds in the sky. Visitors to the exhibition say that his work evokes a lasting sense of lightness and peace.
For the Spaniards, the Hôtel de Sarret became the object of inspiration. Upon arrival, the guys immediately noticed a courtyard lamp with a very unusual shadow. How to depict the shadow of a lighting fixture in architecture? The guys decided that showing the shadow with candles is very symbolic, especially if there are 15,000 candles. On the last day of the exhibition, visitors were allowed to take candles as a souvenir, according to the authors, this is how they imagine the spread of art.
The Japanese decided to take a different path - they harmoniously used two old architectural styles: Japanese and French. Their work combines French grace with the traditional symbol of Japanese painting - clouds. Passing through paper forms above the ground, the light changes and becomes soft, like a cloudy day. According to the authors, this lighting most fully conveys the atmosphere of the installation.
