An exhibition entitled “The Saved Treasures of Bulgaria” was opened in Sofia on November 6. The peculiarity of this exhibition is that it includes only exhibits that were confiscated by the Bulgarian special services from the so-called black archaeologists and smugglers.

Lyudmil Vagalinski, director of the archaeological museum of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, spoke with representatives of the news media. He said that recently a huge number of places with illegal archaeological excavations have appeared, and the number of people employed on them reaches 30 thousand people, which is comparable in number to the size of the Bulgarian army. They noted that only a small number of valuable exhibits can be removed and left within the country. Many objects have long been taken out of the country, lost irretrievably.

The exhibition that has now opened in Sofia features about three hundred exhibits. The point of its holding is not to show cultural attractions, but to show the general public the cultural values that are regularly and in large enough quantities exported outside the state.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition was attended by Iliyana Yotova, who holds the position of Vice-President of Bulgaria. She said that such objects, which are found by black archaeologists and taken out by smugglers, are the history of the country. These are valuable historical exhibits that should not be sold. Each removed historical find turns into a white spot in the history of Bulgaria. Almost all the objects that are presented at the exhibition "Saved Treasures of Bulgaria" are not known where they were found, which means that they have already partially lost their value, since they were left without a biography.

Mladen Marinov, head of the Bulgarian Ministry of Internal Affairs, said that the police are very serious about the salvation of historical values, but only they do not always and do not always succeed due to the spread of criminal activity. All those involved in the extraction of historical objects and their export outside Bulgaria are carefully hidden, and it turns out to be extremely difficult to identify such criminals. And yet the police are active. For example, just a few days before the opening of the exhibition, a special operation was carried out to prevent the export of 3, 6 thousand valuable artifacts from the country.
