Imagine that you are at a wedding - there are many guests around, relatives came from all over the country, festivities for two days in a row. There are suspicions that the bride is pregnant, but this is not so scary, because she looks at her groom happily and in love. And what if, in fact, there is no wedding, and the groom is a fake. Like his parents, and his relatives, and his friends. And they all saw each other for the first time only the day before the celebration.

Fake weddings have recently become a real business in Vietnam. Here a “husband for rent” is not an assistant for household issues in the house, here it is really an opportunity to rent a husband for a wedding, family celebrations and even for a divorce. And this is not just a whim of girls who want to put on a beautiful dress and take part in “their main holiday”. For local girls, such a wedding is sometimes the least evil in their situation.

According to local traditions, if a girl gives birth to a child being unmarried, she is doomed to become an outcast. Relatives often send such a girl somewhere to the village, where no one knows her, so long as she does not dishonor the family. Or she herself goes to have an abortion. Under such circumstances, it is not surprising that Vietnam has the highest abortion rate in Asia: according to statistics, every (!) Woman of reproductive age in Vietnam performs 2.5 abortions in her life. About 40 percent of all pregnancies in this country are terminated through abortion.

“Local girls have access to contraceptives, but they continue to come to the clinic for abortions. They come 3-4 times - and this is despite the fact that each time they are explained about the risks associated with this operation,”says Nguyen Duc, director of the Institute of Reproductive Medicine. At some point, the situation was so serious that the ratio of born and born children to terminated pregnancies was 1: 1.

Previously, unmarried girls who became pregnant had a choice to either have an abortion or go to the other end of the country, where there is no one to know her. But now another option has appeared - to play a fake wedding. Marriage agencies have candidates for any request: for wealthy clients and for the poor. The cost of such a groom depends on the volume of services provided: either it is just to be at the wedding, or during the year to periodically appear also at family celebrations, outings and other events that would support the illusion of family life among neighbors. Such a complex of services can cost the bride's family US $ 4,500.

With such a groom, the bride first meets the day before the wedding. He comes with "parents" who, like him, are actors. They together learn each other's stories, names, compose a common story that will be voiced at the wedding. And on the wedding day, the celebration is planned in such a way that the "signing of the marriage contract", which, of course, does not exist at all, would take place without witnesses. The only document that the bride signs is a contract with a marriage agency for the provision of services and payment for them.

Such marriage agencies constantly face criticism, but they appeal that it is not their whim to arrange such ostentatious weddings, but the society itself forces girls to such decisions. Families of girls are ready for anything to save their face in the eyes of society. If they don't, they will simply be kicked out or outlived from their community. Moreover, many women argue that the option of fake weddings is currently the only option that allows girls to keep their child and remain themselves not outcasts. Children who were born under the guise of such fictitious marriages are already several years old, and their mothers assure that if there were no fake weddings, these children would not exist either.
