Almost 45 years have passed since the tragic departure of Gennady Shpalikov, but his poems still sound relevant, the viewer is happy to watch films based on his scripts. “And I am walking, walking around Moscow” is one of the most famous songs to the verses of Shpalikov, which he wrote literally on the go. He was talented, freedom-loving and sincere, and also deeply unhappy. Gennady Shpalikov and Natalya Ryazantseva honestly tried to save their marriage, but they could not.
First kiss
They met at VGIK, where they studied at the screenwriting department. True, the young man was a year younger, because by the time of admission, Gennady Shpalikov managed to graduate from the Kiev Suvorovskoye and even unlearn a year at the higher military command school in Moscow, from where he was discharged after an injury.
Gennady Shpalikov was very talented and relaxed, he often talked with teachers on abstract topics. The teachers loved him for his military bearing, friendliness and ability to defend his own point of view.
Natalya Ryazantseva was not at all carried away by Shpalikov, and he somehow did not pay much attention to her. They habitually greeted at the institute, but when the girl was instructed to rewrite the population at the Altai Hotel, Gennady unexpectedly volunteered to help her. And then in a hotel room, where a kind of "headquarters" was organized, he proposed to her. So, right away, without any explanations and declarations of love. He ardently convinced Natalia that their marriage was inevitable, he had already seen in his dreams their common house on the ocean shore, and two sons, whom he would take on a fishing trip.
A little later, Natalya left for Leningrad for a volleyball competition, soon Gennady arrived there, who decided not to leave his beloved without his attention. Initially, he was going to ski in Karelia, but he stopped by to visit Natasha, and so he stayed.
It was in the Northern capital, on one of the many bridges, that they kissed for the first time. And Gennady immediately naturally fainted. He didn’t pretend at all, in fact he lost consciousness for a few moments. Perhaps the reason for this was angina pectoris, diagnosed in the poet quite early. But soon the young man got up and, together with Natalya, went on a walk around the city.
And then more and more insistently called the girl to marry. She understood that she was not at all burning with passion for Gennady, which she honestly told him about. But his lack of feeling was not in the least frightened. And Natalya suddenly agreed to Shpalikova's next offer, deciding that it was fun with him and it was quite possible to do without any love experiences there.
Difficulties in family life
They got married at the end of March 1959, and they really had fun together. They got to know and met interesting people, discussed literature, cinema and theater, made plans and wrote their scripts. They often visited Gennady's mother, Lyudmila Nikiforovna, whose older brother was the famous General Perevertkin, who at that time served as Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs. Feasts in the poet's parental home were invariably accompanied by abundant libations. No one could have imagined then that Gennady was absolutely not allowed to drink. He became addicted to alcohol pretty quickly and later did not see any problem in this.
Unlike Shpalikov's relatives, Natalya's parents were never able to reconcile with her daughter's husband. The son-in-law did not have a constant source of income, and he clearly loved to drink. The newlyweds lived with the spouse's parents, guests often came to them, and during the get-togethers, of course, they drank. Soon the spouses had to rent a room, behind it there was another one: the owners did not always like the guests of the spouses.
Gennady was very talented, Alexander Galich, Viktor Nekrasov, Marlen Khutsiev and other famous personalities treated him with great respect. And Natalya herself sincerely admired her husband, but she could not fall in love with him.
Did not get along
Gennady Shpalikov's love gradually grew into dependence. But all his wife's timid attempts to reason with her husband were unsuccessful: he did not consider himself an alcoholic for the simple reason that he could work in any condition. When Ryazantseva drove out Shpalikov, he wandered around for some time among his acquaintances, and then came to his wife and took her to Gagra. After the trip, they began to live together again, deciding to give themselves another chance.
But life together did not work out. They both worked, but the family never had money. Gennady still wrote a lot, but he didn’t drink less either. Natalya Ryazantseva admits: he needed another wife who could not only admire his talent, but also raise her husband, support him, become a faithful friend and helper for him. She herself was not like that and did not know how to help her husband get rid of the craving for alcohol. And feelings that in any way resembled true love, she never arose.
As a result, they still divorced, indicating the banal reason for the divorce: "They did not agree in character." True, Gennady Shpalikov at first did not particularly believe that this was serious. He often borrowed from his ex-wife, invariably repaying debts. When she was already married to Ilya Averbakh, a letter from the first came to the second husband. Shpalikov asked Averbakh to return Natalia to him. And at the same time he drank more and more, in a state of intoxication he often did not reach the house, he could fall asleep on the street or in the entrance.
After he married Inna Gulaya, became the father of a wonderful girl Daria, who will become an actress in the future. Inna Gulaya could not endure her husband's drunkenness for a long time and left him with her daughter. And on November 1, 1974, the poet voluntarily took his own life by hanging himself on the second floor of one of the dachas in Peredelkino.
