Video: Shaded portraits of Roni Stretch (Roni Stretch)

Visitors who welcomed the British artist's exhibition Roni Stretch, in the first minutes they are perplexed and look inquiringly around. Say, we were promised unusual paintings, and instead of this, the gallery displays multi-colored canvases, and completely empty! What's the catch? And the catch is that the work of a talented Briton should be viewed much more carefully, and from a special angle. At first glance, these canvases are monochromatic - in fact, the author draws them in shades of the same color, demonstrating a phenomenal sense of color, the concept of light and shadow, and revealing the limitless possibilities of colors.
Illusion, optical illusion, playing with the consciousness and subconsciousness of a person - the work of Roni Stretch can be considered anything. It is just impossible not to reckon with them. Someone considers these portraits to be riddles, while someone sees in them a model of modern society, where each person tries to hide his essence under a kind of "mask" of costumes and accessories, jewelry and makeup, hiding in them like a snail in a shell.
But there is another take on monochrome Stretch portraits: exercises for meditation. You can spend hours looking at a colored canvas on the wall, focusing and defocusing your eyesight on shades, then seeing, and then again losing sight of the portrait "hidden" inside. And to rejoice like a child when the image appears is a small victory, a portion of positiveness and a smile. Check out these and other works on Roni Stretch's website.
