The Paris Catacombs are one of the world's largest artificial underground passage systems. Their length, according to various estimates, ranges from 187 to 300 kilometers. And add to them hundreds of kilometers of underground utilities. The result is a whole city located under the overground metropolis. And this city lives by its own laws. It is full of variety, full of events, full of people.
Few Parisians and tourists were in this underground city. Perhaps some "extreme" people visited the ossuary - a storage of bones, which contains the remains of about six million people (almost three times more than the population of the current city of Paris without suburbs).
But the catacombs near Paris are famous not only for the ossuary. You can see absolutely amazing things here. Here you can get to a drum and bass party or to the studio of an artist who paints the walls of the dungeons with his incredible paintings and creates sculptures and bas-reliefs from lime stones.
If you ask for it, then you can take a boat ride on a real underground river and feel like the Phantom of the Opera (or his beloved Christina, who is closer to something).
And if you get a special permit, you can get into the gold reserve depository of the National Bank of France. It is also located somewhere here, several dozen below the level of the Parisian pavement.
