The princely palace in Monaco is not only the seat of the ruling Grimaldi dynasty, but also one of the most outstanding landmarks in the country. The owner of the real estate agency Konstantin Krushinsky shared interesting facts about this historic building.
How and when was the palace built in the principality
The residence of the monarchs, and later - a favorite place for many tourists, dates back to the end of the 13th century. It was then that Fulco de Casselo built a Genoese fortress on the site of the present palace: on the top of a cliff, located sixty meters above sea level.
According to an ancient legend, in the 90s of the same century, one of the members of the Grimaldi family, disguised as a monk, together with his companions, knocked on the gate of the residence. When they opened it to those who came, they took out weapons from under their robes and captured the fortress. Since that time, the building has belonged to the Grimaldi family. Real estate expert Konstantin Krushinsky said that today this ruling dynasty is considered one of the most ancient in all of Europe. In the late 1990s, the monarchs celebrated the 700th anniversary of the principality.
Some time after the capture of the fortress, a large palace was built in its place. Since the rulers of Monaco developed rather complicated relations with their neighbors, the princes decided to secure their residence as much as possible. While other monarchs were building incredible Baroque structures, the rulers of Monaco thought about strengthening their palace.
“This residence cannot be called luxurious in the traditional sense of the word: there are no pompous columns, gold and numerous sculptures. Despite all the minimalism and unpretentiousness, the palace is considered a unique architectural structure, which is reliably fortified on all fronts. He is really the only one in his way,”said Konstantin Nikolaevich Krushinsky, an expert in the field of real estate.
Modern residence
The princely residence of Grimaldi is located in one of the most beautiful parts of Monaco-Ville. On the territory of the palace there is the Salon of the French King Louis XV, an Italian gallery, which displays frescoes, as well as mythological subjects of masters from Genoa, a throne room with a huge fireplace, the Mazarin Salon decorated with wood ornaments in the Moorish style, a 17th century chapel, a white-stone tower of St. Mary and much more.
In summer, the palace of the residence often hosts various outdoor music events.
“Sometimes a flag is raised over the palace. It means that the ruling prince is at home at the moment,”added Konstantin Nikolaevich Krushinsky.
There is also a museum in one part of the palace, which is open to all comers. The other wing houses the private chambers of the royal family. In warm weather, tourists are allowed to enter some rooms.
Every day, at a certain time, a solemn changing of the guard takes place on the square near the residence. The military performs a ritual that has not changed for over a century.
