As you know, Salvador Dali did not have children. But his muse and wife Gala had a daughter, who was born in the first marriage of Elena Dyakonov and Paul Eluard. Cecile Eluard lived for almost a hundred years and throughout her life she diligently avoided publicity. Was the fate of this girl, who received the nickname "child of surrealism", happy, and why did she never give interviews either about her mother or about her shocking husband, the brilliant Salvador Dali?
Fruit of love
Paul Eluard and Elena Dyakonov met in 1912 in the Swiss town of Clavadel, where they both were treated at a local sanatorium. Having dispersed after the end of the course, Paul and Elena did not lose sight of each other. The first feeling for both was bright, and the desire to live together all their lives seemed quite natural.
Separation only inflamed their passion, and the First World War became the catalyst that only accelerated their reunification. Gala came to her beloved in Paris, and he could not even meet her at the station because of military service. However, she did not have to doubt his feelings.
Paul's family accepted their son's girlfriend rather coolly, but for the lovers it did not matter. In May 1918, almost a year and a half after the marriage of Paul and Gala, little Cecile was born.
Child of surrealism
Paul was immediately imbued with tenderness for the baby, because he found in her the features of his beloved woman. But for Gala, the birth of her daughter became an obstacle to her habitual and free lifestyle. The young mother could no longer argue about the fate of art, shine in society, proving to herself and those around her her own uniqueness and sublimity.
While her husband met with artists, Gala was forced to be bored in the company of her daughter. On such days, Gala was angry and, it seems, even hated Cecile. With anger, which the young mother did not even try to hide, the gala sent her daughter "for a walk in the garden." She blamed her daughter for being cut off from society. And she doomed her own daughter to dreary loneliness, who spent time somewhere beyond the boundaries of mother's love. Cecile was not destined to feel the love of her mother.
But the father did not cherish the soul in his baby. As soon as she grew up, he always took her everywhere with him and proudly introduced her to his friends. Another thing is that Cecile did not like the increased attention from her father's friends. They all seemed to her old and boring. Except, perhaps, Pablo Picasso, who attended boxing matches with the girl and allowed her to visit him in the workshop without warning.
Max Ernst and Pablo Picasso painted Cecile, Mine Ray took pictures of her, the baby patiently posed, but it never occurred to her to be proud of her surroundings. She considered this state of affairs to be quite natural. However, she knew no other. Only one thing worried Cecile - the sheer indifference to her mother.
Eternal pain
Could Cecile not see what was happening in the life of her parents? First, Max Ernst settled with them, and dad, in front of his daughter's eyes, became more and more gloomy. But Paul Eluard courageously made a face, trying to remain faithful to the principles of free love propagated in their circle. He could not imagine his life without Gala and was ready for anything to only keep her.
After Paul tried to escape from the obsession named Gala to Asia, but nothing came of it. But the main test lay ahead of him. When Salvador Dali appeared in Gala's life, he had to say goodbye to his wife forever. Like Cecile, she had to try to forget about her mother.
After Gala and Salvador Dali began to live together, the mother stopped even remembering that her daughter was in her life at all. However, with exactly the same ease, she erased her first love from her memory. Paul Eluard desperately yearned, appealed to pity and maternal feelings, but everything was in vain, Gala had already made her choice.
Later, Paul will bring his second wife into the house, who at that time was a representative of the oldest profession. Vulnerable and fragile Nush, by the will of fate found herself on the panel, tried to become Eluard a good wife and become a mother for the girl. Cecile was warm to Nush, but it was not Mom at all.
Cecile Eluard first married at the age of 20 to the poet Luc Dean, but very quickly broke up with him. At the age of 26, she went down the aisle with the artist Gerard Woulleni. She later married two more times.
Two years after the second marriage, Cecile Nush died, and her loving daughter, as best she could, supported her father, who was grieving at the loss. He survived his second wife by only four years, however, before leaving this world in 1952, he managed to marry Dominique Lemore.
Gala never maintained a relationship with her daughter, and Cecile only learned from the newspapers about her mother's grave condition. Then, in 1982, Gala's daughter jumped off and went to Port Lligat, hoping to see a goodbye woman who erased her from her life.
But the servant did not even let her on the doorstep, informing that Gala did not feel any desire to see her daughter. The brilliant Gala, the inspiration and muse of Dali, did not allow Cecile to hug her even in the face of death. And she herself did not remember her, making up her will.
But Cecile showed character and, on the advice of a lawyer, still claimed the rights to part of the inheritance. The dispute between Gala's daughter and the Spanish government ended mutually beneficial and even without a trial. Cecile received several copies from her mother's collection, including the "Portrait of Paul Eluard" painted by Salvador Dali, and a respectable amount of millions of dollars.
After the death of her mother, Cecile Eluard completely disappeared from the public eye. She lived a quiet and inconspicuous life, and all her life she was engaged in rare and ancient books. She raised three children, and later rejoiced at the birth of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She passed on her passion for literature and art to them.
Cecile Éluard passed away on October 10, 2016 and was buried next to her father and his second wife Nouche in the Père Lachaise cemetery.
Her name went down in art history thanks to Salvador Dali, whose wife and muse she was for many years. She managed to become for him at the same time a mother, lover and friend, absolutely irreplaceable and adored. But Dali was far from the only man for her. Gala never denied herself her desires and made the artist indulge all her whims.
