Maryse Condé, a writer from Guadeloupe, won the Alternative Nobel Prize in Literature. This award was organized by the New Swedish Academy. The reason for this was the decision this year 2018 not to award the Nobel Prize in Literature because of the sex scandal that broke out around the husband of a poet, who is a member of the Swedish Academy.
In the course of an independent investigation, it was revealed that some representatives of this academy, even before the official announcement, talked about who will once again become the winner of the prestigious award. After all these unpleasant discoveries, several writers decided to leave the Swedish Academy. As a result, only 11 writers remained in the Academy and only one person was not enough to award the prize - according to the rules, there should be 12 of them.
However, 117 Swedish journalists, actors and writers decided not to stop there and decided to get together and organize the New Academy, which this year is awarding a prize called the Alternative Nobel Prize in Literature.
The award ceremony, which is presented for the first time and most likely for the last time, was held at the Stockholm Public Library on 12 October. It was decided to give an alternative prize to Maryse Condé, a writer who is 81 years old. She has written several plays, short stories, novels and books in French and English. At one time she managed to work in different cities. Maryse currently resides in France and Guadeloupe.
At the time of her announcement as the owner of the Alternative Nobel Prize, the writer was in Guadeloupe and recorded a video message. In it, she thanked everyone for the award, which is important not only for her, but also for all the inhabitants of Guadeloupe, of whom there are not so many.
The award ceremony is scheduled for December 9th. At this event, Maryse Condé will receive a check for $ 112,000. After this event, the New Academy is planned to be disbanded.
It is worth remembering that the organizers of the Alternative Nobel Prize launched a public vote, which started on July 10 and ended on August 14. This vote made it clear which four writers are the most popular. These included Japanese writer Haruki Murakami, Canadian writer Kim Thuy, and English science fiction writer Neil Gaiman.
