Helsinki in 2012, it was recognized as the World Design Capital. In honor of this, many objects appeared in the city, designed to confirm the fairness of the awarding of the mentioned honorary title. For example, an object appeared in the capital of Finland Silo 468, which is an old oil storage facility converted into something that functionally resembles a lighthouse.
We already know very illustrative examples of the transformation of old warehouse towers into modern structures with completely different functions. The Amsterdam silo tower, for example, will soon turn into a climbing wall and an office center, but in Helsinki this year an art lighthouse has appeared, located in a former oil storage facility.
The oil storage bunker was built at a cargo port in the Kruunuvuorenranta area of Helsinki several decades ago. However, in recent years, it was no longer used for its intended purpose - it stood empty and abandoned, rusted. This destructive process took place until the city authorities decided to leave it at the mercy of artists from the Lighting Design Collective studio in Madrid. So they turned the old tower into a modern art object.
They created more than a thousand holes in it (moreover, most of them did not even have to be drilled - the artists used holes formed by rust), and inserted an LED light bulb into each. All these lighting elements were connected to a single computer control system.
Moreover, changes in the color and intensity of light in the Silo 468 object occur depending on external natural conditions - the strength of the wind, the noise of sea waves flying past the birds, the presence of rain or snow.
Residents of the Helsinki coastal area can enjoy this gorgeous light show immediately after dark until 2.05 am. In addition, anyone can walk directly to the Silo 468 and even go inside this art lighthouse.
