All of us in childhood, using a carnation or some other sharp and hard object, wrote our name or the name of our beloved on freshly whitewashed walls or tree bark. But the Portuguese Alexandre Farto turned this hooliganism into a real art. True, as canvases for his works, he takes the walls of old, often abandoned houses, and not residential entrances.
Decline brings depression. It is especially hard for residents of large cities, in which there are always many abandoned houses, factories, warehouses and other urban infrastructure. All this is often found where there are many people, which has a very bad effect on their psychological state.
Here is the Portuguese artist Alexander Farto, hiding under the creative pseudonym Vhils, figured out how to change this situation for the better. He decided to create paintings on the walls of old buildings, namely, portraits.
Moreover, he does not draw them in the usual sense of the word. That is, it does not apply paint layer by word to the surface. On the contrary, he takes it off. Alexander Farto, using conventional and jackhammers, picks, crowbars, screwdrivers and other construction tools, removes a layer of old whitewash, plaster, paints, exposing what is hidden under them, most often, brickwork. And this is how his paintings appear!
Similar portraits, created by Alexander Farto, can be seen throughout Portugal, in London, Moscow, New York. Moreover, not only on the outer walls of large houses located on the "red lines" of the streets, but also in the most unexpected places - in gateways, inside abandoned buildings.
It would seem that the type of art chosen by this artist looks beautiful on the street, but it is completely unthinkable in art salons and galleries. But Alexander Farto also manages to make exhibition versions of his paintings, using old doors, walls, billboards, fences for this.

Graffiti on the walls of Kelburn Castle
Graffiti art can be found everywhere in the city: on walls, houses, fences. But why stop there, why not choose a larger canvas, because the field for creativity will become much wider. Why not paint the walls of a dull Scottish castle brightly colored? Of course, you first need to find one. And in this case, the Brazilian graffiti artists were very lucky, because the owners of the castle themselves provided them with a whole tower as a coloring, without limiting the flight of their fantasies
Portraits on street facades by Alexandre Farto
The artist Alexandre Farto creates fantastically realistic portraits on the facades of street buildings. Looking at his work, it seems to people that the portraits were mistakenly developed not on photographic paper, but on concrete and plaster. And now impressionable townspeople think that the houses themselves are watching them with the eyes of the people depicted on them
Rip, break, scratch! Installation "ScratchingTheSurface" by Alexandre Farto aka Vhils
Art is a process of creation, not destruction. At least that's how we were taught in art history lessons. Although, if you think about it, the authors of the most famous works destroyed something. Lumps of marble and granite, rocks and trees from which sculptures were created … What can we say about graffiti on walls and fences, which many people still consider not decoration, but vandalism. I wonder how such grumblers will react to the unconventional works of Alexandre Farto, who acts on TV
