When we single-handedly eat a whole packet of our favorite cookies or one by one we send M & Ms into our mouths - do we think about the consequences of indulging our little weaknesses? Mexican photographer Daniela Edburg shows us where all this can lead. Somewhere she laughs at human weaknesses, somewhere she exaggerates them, but the result is equally ominous: "Drop Dead Gorgeous" - though beautiful, but death.
The first photograph in the "Drop Dead Gorgeous" series was taken in 2001, but at the time, Daniela Edburg was planning a completely different project. After becoming a Bachelor of Fine Arts, she decided to make a series of remakes of classical painting using photography. The first attempt was "Death by Shampoo" as an interpretation of the painting "Death of Marat" by the French artist Jacques Louis David. However, as Daniela herself admits, the lack of experience forced her to abandon the planned project. Instead, the girl decided to create a photo series dedicated to the relationship between glamor and death. As a result, a series of pictures appeared - bright, stylish in appearance, but creepy in meaning.
Daniela Edburgh does not invite professional models to work on the "Drop Dead Gorgeous" series - she always shoots only her close friends. And the photographer chooses familiar and familiar places for shooting: his grandmother's house, a friend's kitchen, her husband's studio.
In most cases, the heroines of Daniela Edburg's photographs find their death either from food or from the goods of the beauty industry. What are the titles of her works: "Death by Cotton Candy", "Death by Gelatin Bears", "Death by Hair Dye", "Death by a Hair Dryer". The girl herself explains it this way: “What I enjoy now, after a few moments, makes me feel guilty. I am amazed at how much I love the foods I eat, but if I stop and think about it for a minute, it’s absurd. My works are not criticism or reproach, but just an exaggeration of my own reality."
“I think death is very seductive,” says Daniela. - She makes us evaluate beauty as something very ephemeral. Jean Baudrillard said that our weaknesses make us seductive. And when else do we look weaker than at the moment when we part with life?"
