Wooden works by sculptor Ricky Swallow are called models, mines, miniatures, dioramas, monuments and souvenirs. But regardless of which definition will be chosen, all viewers are unanimous in their assessment of the author's works: executed with great skill, they deserve admiration.
The key to success in Ricky Swallow's work is the time and labor invested in his sculptures. It is surprising that Rikki never studied the art of woodcarving, comprehending all the intricacies of this lesson on his own. “You either have a certain talent, or you don’t,” says Swallow, hinting that the success of a true master is determined not at all by a university diploma, but above all by a gift from above.
“Several years ago I worked with different materials, and it was like finding what I want to say and the best way to do it,” says the sculptor. "But since I started working with wood, I realized that I had found a material that constantly challenges me." One of the author's favorite themes is skeletons and skulls. Thus, he reminds us of the transience of time and the mortality of all living things.
Ricky Swallow was born in Australia in 1974. The author gained national fame in 1999, having won the Contempora 5 Prize in Melbourne. In 2005, the sculptor was invited to represent Australia at the Venice Biennale. Several years ago the sculptor moved to Los Angeles and then to London.
